LEES RACING’S commitment and service to our owners is second to none.
As New South Wales’ leading provincial stable, we pride ourselves on looking after our clients and ensuring all have the best possible racing experience.
Kris and our staff provide a friendly and interactive experience for owners, maintaining a wonderful tradition initially founded by his late father Max.
Lees Racing trains a big team of thoroughbreds from our well established base at Broadmeadow, and we now have the back-up of an agistment and pre-training property (Ellalong Farm) in the Lower Hunter Valley.
That “best of both worlds” set-up was never better reflected than when Kris recorded the 10th Group 1 success of his career when our outstanding mare Lucia Valentina romped away with the $4m Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Randwick during the 2016 The Championships.
She had come back from a trip to Hong Kong in December, 2015 – when she ran so well to finish fifth in a record-breaking Hong Kong Gold Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin – and freshened up at Ellalong before returning to Broadmeadow to prepare for a second tilt at The Championships.
The Queen Elizabeth was Kris’ third victory with Lucia Valentina at racing’s elite level – she had previously won the Vinery Stud Stakes and Turnbull Stakes - adding to earlier Group 1 triumphs with Samantha Miss (Champagne Stakes, Flight Stakes and VRC Oaks), County Tyrone (The Metropolitan and Sydney Cup), Vitesse Dane (Queensland Oaks) and Le Romain (Randwick Guineas).
Kris’ focus, care and horsemanship ensures every horse in his care is given the best opportunity to reach its maximum racing potential.
The training facilities – including an all-weather Pro-Ride circuit - at Broadmeadow are first-class and have been given a huge boost by RacingNSW’s decision to invest heavily in Newcastle Jockey Club’s future, funding the installation of a new inside grass track (Beaumont) and course proper.
Kris also has the advantage of using a modern equine pool on course and also has several walking machines to assist maintaining horses’ fitness.
But that’s only part of the story.
Owners are kept up to date with regular bulletins on the progress of their horses, both whilst they are in work at Broadmeadow or having a break at the farm.
Pre-training updates are also provided, and owners can easily access videos of their horses at trackwork.
Kris also gives owners his assessment of their horse’s chances prior to a race via a recording, and similarly a post-race summary is also sent.
Additionally, Lees Racing’s website is regularly updated with stable news.
Owners who wish to organise a visit to either Broadmeadow or Ellalong to see their horses are most welcome to do so, and can arrange this by contacting Lucas Miller (0400 905 991).
Ellalong Farm is our boutique spelling and pre-training property in the magnificent Lower Hunter Valley.
Built on 150 acres of fertile land adjacent to the village of Ellalong, this superb facility features everything horses require to rejuvenate fully during a spell, preparing to return to full training, or for a quick freshen during an arduous campaign.
Ellalong Farm’s features include:
. 40 boxes with day yards;
. 22 paddocks of varying sizes, all with shelters;
. Enclosed state of the art aquacizer (water walker) and dry walker;
. Stable blocks;
. Pre-training track; and
. Enclosed round yard.
Kris says the acquisition of Ellalong Farm has added a new dimension to his training operation.
“It has been a wonderful addition to our business. It allows me to be more hands-on with spelling and pre-training programs tailored to each individual horse, and also gives us an important outlet for a horse in work. As an example, if one has a tough run, I can send it to the farm for a few days to freshen up away from stable life. I have no doubt adding Ellalong Farm to our business has given Lees Racing a definite edge.” – KRIS LEES
