Invincible Gem Out Of Tibbie

Sep 15, 2017

NEWCASTLE: Friday, September 15, 2017: KRIS Lees has decided not to risk pre-post favorite Invincible Gem in today’s $150,000 Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) at Broadmeadow.

“She has developed a bit of a cough, so there’s no point taking any chances with her,” Lees said this morning.

“Hopefully, she will be okay to run at Rosehill Gardens next Saturday.”

That is the $400,000 Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m), in which Lees also intends to run last week’s unlucky Rosehill runner Danish Twist.

As with the Tibbie, the Golden Pendant is a black type race for fillies and mares.

Missing today’s Tibbie has put Epsom Handicap plans for Invincible Gem up in the air.

The $1m Group 1 Epsom (1600m) will be run at Royal Randwick a week after the Golden Pendant.

“The Epsom is still an option,” Lees said. “But we have to get her through the Golden Pendant first, and then make a decision.”

Though Invincible Gem is an absentee from the Tibbie, Lees will still have three representatives.

He runs Zestful (Tye Angland), Skylight Glow (apprentice Rachel King) and first emergency Princess Posh (Brenton Avdulla), now assured of a start.

Both Skylight Glow (1200m Benchmark 84 Handicap) and Whispered Secret (1400m Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes) will both miss the Randwick meeting tomorrow.

Whispered Secret (Corey Brown) takes on the “boys” in today’s $150,000 Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m), which Lees won last year with Invincible Gem when it was run at Randwick.

Rosa Carolina (Glyn Schofield) will be his sole Randwick representative in the 1200m Benchmark 84, whilst he flies to Melbourne to saddle triple Group 1 winner Le Romain in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.

Lees has four runners at tomorrow’s Newcastle meeting; Intrinsic (1200m F & M Class 1), Lomazzo (1200m CG&E Class 1), Wallangarra (1400m Maiden) and Calypso Bay (1400m Provincial Cup).

Mitchell Bell rides Intrinsic, whilst Aaron Bullock partners Lomazzo, Wallangarra and Calypso Bay.

Former English horse Wallangarra is making his debut for the stable, and has been gelded since he last raced.
