NEWCASTLE: Tuesday, May 12, 2015: KRIS Lees will have weight in numbers in Saturday’s $140,000 Denise’s Joy Stakes at the Scone stand-alone meeting.
Lees indicated this morning he was keen to start all four entries – Onemorezeta, Savoureux, Felines and Alpen Rose – in the Listed three-year-old fillies’ event, which carries a $140,000 purse and will be run over 1100m.
The Denise’s Joy is a Quality handicap, and Flemington spring carnival winner Onemorezeta has 59kg joint topweight with Fine Mist. Savoureux has 55kg and Felines and Alpen Rose have the limit (54kg).
Sixteen fillies can start – and all four Lees’ horses are assured berths in the field.
“It’s a black type race, and thus a good opportunity to run all my fillies, especially as they are owned in different interests,” Lees said.
The Denise’s Joy will be Onemorezeta’s final start before a spell.
She ran third to Ygritte in the Gosford Guineas (1200m) on April 2 against her own age before taking on older mares nine days later when 10th to accomplished wet tracker Avoid Lightning in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Randwick during The Championships.
Lees, meanwhile, is seeking a replacement rider for his smart mare Fine Bubbles in Saturday’s Group 3 $200,000 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) at Scone.
He had booked James McDonald; however all but one of the 26 nominations (including Fine Bubbles) have been weighted on the limit (54kg).
Kiwi mare Diademe is the 59kg topweight.
McDonald won the Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) on Fine Bubbles at last September’s Newcastle spring carnival.
Lees was thrilled with the mare’s Wyong trial success last Friday leading into the Dark Jewel. He chose to trial her instead of running in the Darley Crown (1300m) a day later, postponed to Rosehill from Hawkesbury a week earlier.
Lees has not yet decided whether to also run Scorpio Queen in the Dark Jewel or Friday’s $200,000 Scone Cup (1600m).
However, he has definitely confirmed a resumption for smart mare Thump (56.5kg) in the $140,000 Listed Ortensia Stakes (1100m) on Saturday.
Thump won the Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) first-up at Randwick on February 14. She hasn’t raced since finishing last in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill in March when the distance proved beyond her.
